The Slaps

(Listen while you read!)

The Slaps are a three member group from Chicago based out of Depaul University. Guitarist and vocalist Rand Kelly, bassist Ramsey Bell, and drummer Josh Resing released their first album “Susan’s Room” in early 2017. The band released a spicy collection of singles in 2018, the newest of which titled “Houses” which you are listening to now. (Houses is actually a revived song from 2016 which can be found on their bandcamp https://theslaps.bandcamp.com/track/houses , the evolution in sound is interesting)

The Slaps’ sound is a hidden stroke of genius. The blend of something familiar with a sound unlike any other is only achievable by a group with unique talent. There are many musical aspects that make the band so original, but one that gives them an edge is their ability to play in different tunings, and heck maybe even out of tune sometimes. Anyone can play a song with four basic chords, but The Slaps have a draw-bag of some of the most unique chords I have ever heard in rock music.

At the time of this post, The Slaps have 15,056 monthly listeners on Spotify, and their most popular song, “Song for a Friend” has 215,266 listens.  While the band is very fresh onto the scene, they are already making some waves. At a show I recently attended at Schubas in Chicago, the band revealed that they were working on an album that would “probably be out soon, maybe not, probably never actually”. Needless to say The Slaps are a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

The Slaps have one hell of a live show. If you plan on being front and center, you might want to consider a helmet and some knee-pads. The Slaps are oozing with energy, and its impossible to not engage in a head bang or two. The first time I saw The Slaps was at an off the grid venue known as “The Oval Office” somewhere in Chicago. There was a “lack of supervision” one could say, and letting The Slaps run wild made for one of the most fun nights of my life.

“Susan’s Room” has everything a listener could want from an album, including some trippy skits. The collection of singles reminds you what The Slaps are all about, and even show off a softer side. It was almost impossible to choose favorites, it felt like choosing a favorite child, but here are my picks:

1: See Her

This song has all those classic Slaps elements. Those wonky Rand chords, an off-beat Josh special, and a put-you-in-a-trance baseline from none other than Ramsey. The heartfelt lyrics can put a tear in your eye, and the groove-grunge chorus makes you wanna jump off something.

2: Still Dreaming Yesterday

This is that softer side I was talking about earlier. The band traded in their electric guitars for this lullaby. This song is best enjoyed on a rainy day.

3: Mama

Mama turns it up to 11 and rips the knob off. Rand shows off his ability to craft unique lyrics once again on this track, really making you think. Is a band really a band if they don’t say “spaghetti” in at least one song?

True comparisons to The Slaps are tough, but here are some artists that I think aren’t too far off, or just make a nice pairing:

Lunar Vacation

(Listen while you read!)

Lunar Vacation is a groovy five member ensemble from Atlanta, GA. Guitarist and vocalist Grace Repasky, guitarist Maggie Geeslin, bassist John Michael Young, and drummer Connor Dowd released their first song “Anna” in 2017. Lunar Vacation added keyboardist Matteo De Lurgio, and released their first EP “Swell” later that year.

One year later, the band released its second EP “Artificial Flavors”, a four song masterpiece that truly shows off the band’s talent and technical abilities.

At the time of this post, Lunar Vacation has 56,846 monthly listeners, and their most popular song “Swimming” has 701,512 listens on Spotify. While the young band is enjoying a fair amount of success, I am surprised that they have not accumulated a larger audience. With incredible music, humble and personable members, and an off-the-charts live show, I would not be surprised to see the release of their full length LP launch them into true stardom.

Lunar Vacation’s music has a special sound, a sound that doesn’t fit into any exact genre. For this reason, the band describes their sound as “Pool Rock”, a melody heavy and summer reminiscent vibe. Lunar Vacation isn’t just five people playing music, the musicians all fit together and play off one another to create something bigger than any one person.

I have been lucky enough to see Lunar Vacation twice in Chicago, and each time was an unforgettable experience. Some bands that have a certain glow in the studio can lose their effect in concert. Lunar Vacation is not one of those bands. Lunar Vacation can light up a stage like very few other bands can.

While Lunar Vacation’s EPs are great from the first song to the last, here are my top three picks:

1: The Basement

The Basement sends you back to high school, desperately hoping to get the attention of a crush, and just trying to fit in with the “cool kids”. The song has many layers of synthy guitar and keys, and a wicked baseline. Also, Grace hits a note that you wouldn’t think is humanly possible, and she can do it live too.

2: Blue Honey

Blue Honey is the title track on “Swell”. The song lulls you and and then hits you with a punch. The verses flow seamlessly into the chorus, and send you into a dream-like state. This song is the definition of smooth music.

3: Too Late, Colin

Too Late, Colin has a drippy intro that you can’t help but sway to. Again, Grace demonstrates her amazing vocal talents singing about “a boy in a bubble”. This song demonstrates the band’s ability to use unique sounds to create a truly original audio experience.

While Lunar Vacation does have a truly original sound, here are some artists who I believe pair nicely with their sound:

Calpurnia: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5A2yiLLhc0NJaG8rn4mYp5

The Slaps: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4nNxZ9weXMeokvs9ohcmZl

I strongly encourage you listen to Lunar Vacation. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

About Me

Welcome all music enthusiasts. My name is Zach McNanna, and I am a philosophy and journalism student at North Central College. I am very passionate about music, and my broad interests have led to me to all the corners of the musical spectrum. I have established this blog to discuss the music I have found, and to give readers a chance to experience the songs that bring me so much joy.

Being a musician myself, I am always looking for bands and musicians who are doing something different. This could be something such as changing tuning, using obscure instruments, or something as complex as inventing a whole new genre of music. No matter what the difference is, being original gives the listener an opportunity to experience something they never have before.

This blog will focus on new bands that I feel need to be discovered by listeners, music that missed its prime, and old music that needs to be revived from its former glory.

My posts will talk briefly about the band or musician’s history, their popularity, the elements that make their music special, comparisons to bands or musicians that are more well known, and my experience with the music.
